The study aimed to analyze flocculating activity and mechanism of a novel marine algae culture medium.Method]The flocculating activity of culture medium of S307,a type of marine algae Ulva lactuca L.,isolated from Beihai Guantouling intertidal of Guangxi Province, was tested in this study, and the effects of medium concentration,pH,cationic salt concentration and temperature on the flocculating activity were analyzed. Finally, the flocculating ingredient and mechanism were discussed.[Result]S307 culture medium had good flocculating activity and thermal stability. The flocculating rate against kaolin suspension could reach 72% when the concentration of S307 culture medium was 8% ( v /v) ; optimum pH for the flocculating activity of the system was 12; the optimum efficiency would occur as Ca2+ concentration was 3.6 mmol /L. The results of UV spectrum scanning and flocculating mechanism research indicated that the main flocculating ingredient in the medium was nucleic acid substance, and the medium might contain some extracellular polysaccharide. Moreover, the flocculating ingredient bonded with kaolin particles through ionic bonds rather than hydrogen bonds. [Conclusion]The research provides a novel flocculant for wastewater treatment
